The short version: we're committed to net zero carbon in operation. We're not there yet, and we'll say so — but we're working towards it deliberately and honestly.
Our commitment
We commit to operating as a net zero carbon business. For a small business starting out, that journey has two honest phases: reducing what we can now, and offsetting what we can't until we can do more.
We will not claim to be something we are not. Where we use carbon offsetting, we will use verified, high-quality credits — Gold Standard or equivalent — and we will be transparent about what we are offsetting and why.
What we're doing now
The emissions from a sole-trader consultancy are modest, but not zero. The biggest contributors are business travel and digital infrastructure (devices, cloud services, video calls). We manage these by:
- Defaulting to remote working and virtual meetings where they serve the project as well as in-person
- Choosing rail over air travel wherever practical
- Avoiding unnecessary printing; sharing documents digitally
- Renewing hardware only when necessary, and disposing of it responsibly
Carbon offsetting
We are tracking our operational emissions from the outset so that we have an accurate record to work from. Once the business is making a return, we commit to purchasing and retiring verified carbon credits to offset both our ongoing emissions and those accumulated since we began — bringing us to net zero in operation, retrospectively as well as going forward.
We will only use offsets certified to Gold Standard or Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), and we will not use offsetting as a substitute for reducing emissions directly.
Beyond carbon
Environmental responsibility doesn't begin and end with carbon. We try to apply the same thinking more broadly:
- Single-use plastic: We avoid it where there is a practical alternative.
- Reuse over replacement: We prefer repairing, repurposing, or buying second-hand over buying new — for equipment, materials, and anything else we have a choice over.
- Ecology and nature: We recognise the value of biodiversity and natural systems. Where our work touches the built or natural environment, we look for opportunities to encourage rather than diminish it — whether that's green infrastructure, habitat, or simply not making things worse.
- Animal welfare: We care about the welfare of animals, wild and farmed. Official business catering is vegetarian, and we favour suppliers and products that reflect higher welfare standards.
These aren't headline commitments with targets attached — but they shape the choices we make day to day.
Looking ahead
We want to go further. As the business grows, we intend to measure our emissions more formally, align with the built environment's own net zero targets, and integrate environmental thinking into the advice we give — not just the way we run the business.
Review
We will review this policy annually and update our commitments as our capacity grows. Any questions should be sent to hello@as-architecture.co.uk.
Policies like this should evolve. If you think there's something we've missed, something we've got wrong, or something we could do better, please get in touch — we'd genuinely like to hear it.
